BILINGUAL GRAMMAR >> PHRASAL VERBS
WORK
Let's take work in an office, for an office is a miniature world where all sorts of things happen every day. You are a shorthand-typist. You are expected totake down(tomar, anotar) dictations, totype out(pasar algo en la computadora)letters, tocopy out(copiar algo)reports, tofill in(completar formularios), fill up(completar formularios) orfill out(completar formularios) complicated forms, to decide which bits of the speech your boss will be making this evening should be left out(omitir, eliminar texto), to go over(examinar, revisar)people's work and spot their mistakes, to cut out(recortar)newspaper articles that your boss might be interested in reading, to hang about(moverse, desplazarse)as unobtrusively as possible when he is busy just in case he might need you, and several other things as well. No wonder at the end of the day you feel worn out(agotado/a),and by the end of the year you are positively run down(exhausto/a).
If your boss is a big cat, you will have toput up with(tolerar, soportar) an irritable temper. He will have todo away(abolir, dehacerse de)with obsolete company rules and think of new ones to replace them. He will probabfy jot them down(apuntar algo)in a hurry, and when you have to shape them into(dar formato a un texto)acceptable business jargon, you will find it difficult to make out(descifrar algo)his handwriting. When you finally show them to him, he will cross out(tachar) orstrike off(eliminar de una lista) half of the things you've written, saying, "Miss X, you have let me down(defraudar, fallarle a alguien)badly. This is not what I meant at all". Better ask him to clear up(despejar, poner en claro)the matter to avoid further misunderstandings. He will be thinking of something else already.
Then there are the other people working at the office. Sometimes they are nice enough. But there are those who seem to be waiting for you to settle down(acostumbrarse a)to do some work. Then theycome up with(hacer algún comentario) orcome out with(hacer algún comentario) some silly excuse and pinch cigarettes or chatter round your desk until the boss turns up(aparecer, presentarse)and you are told off(retar, reprender)for allowing that sort of thing to go on(suceder). You try to explain, but he's not listening anyway, so in the end you give up(rendirse, desistir).
One day you take a look at your cheque and you decide you're not getting what you deserve, so you make up your mind(decidirse) to ask for a rise. You go out(salir)to lunch with two other secretaries and the subject crops up(surgir, aparecer)during the conversation. Somehow they persuade you to put in(hablar a favor) a good word for them too, promising to back you up(respaldar a alguien)when the time comes. So you broach the subject that very afternoon, only your friends have by now got cold feet and cry off(echarse atrás), leaving you to manage as best you can. This naturally puts you out(enojar a alguien), but once you've started you can't get out of(salvarse de hacer algo)it that easily. So you insist. Your boss is holding out(aguantar)like brave Numantia, but in the end he will give in(ceder, rendirse);he always does. Now you've got your rise, but so, have the others.
There is still two office types worth mentioning: the one who will slip to the lavatory at least once a day and doze off(hacer una siestita) happily for a while (if he doesn't actually drop off(quedarse dormido)at his own desk), and the one who tries to take you in(engañar a alguien)with kind words and smiles. More often than not you can see through(calar, darse cuenta)him, but he is wonderful at making up(inventar)convincing stories.
Y ahora comprueba tu comprensión seleccionando de cada menú la alternatva correcta para completar estas oraciones. Tómate tu tiempo porque no todos los verbos se encuentran en infinitivo. Verifica luego al final del boletín cómo te ha ido:
