MADE IN, MADE FROM & MADE FOR

AUDIO

Hello! This week on "Ask a Teacher" we will answer a question about the verb MADE when used with prepositions.
when used with prepositions: cuando se lo usa con preposiciones;

QUESTION:
Hello, VOA Learning English, I hope that you are doing well. I would like to know more about the differences between these words: MADE IN, MADE FROM and MADE FOR. Thank you, Abdulkadir from Somalia.
I hope that you are doing well: espero que estén bien;

ANSWER: Dear Abdulkadir, Thanks for being a loyal listener of VOA Learning English. And thank you for writing to us. The verb MADE is often used with prepositions to describe how things are created or produced. Depending on the preposition, like IN, FROM or FOR, the meaning of the verb changes slightly. Let’s start with the verb MADE.
a loyal listener: un oyente leal; how things are created or produced: cómo se crean o producen las cosas; depending on: dependiendo de (el verbo depend va siempre seguido de la preposición on); changes slightly: cambia ligeramente;

MADE

MADE is the past tense form of MAKE. It means to produce, build, or prepare something:
produce, build or prepare: producir, construir o elaborar;

He made me dinner on Valentine's Day.
Él me hizo la cena el día de San Valentín.

Sometimes we use this verb for things we cannot physically see or touch:
we cannot physically see or touch: que no podemos ver o tocar físicsmente;

We made plans to study at the library.
Hicimos planes para estudiar en la biblioteca.

MADE WITH PREPOSITIONS

Let’s look at the examples Abdulkadir asked about: MADE IN, MADE FROM and MADE FOR. MAKE IN, or in the past tense, MADE IN, means that something was produced or built in a certain place, country or city:
asked about: sobre los que preguntó; means that: significa que; was produced or built: fue producido o fabricado; in a certain place: en determinado lugar

The company made products in the USA.
La empresa fabricó productos en los Estados Unidos.

Sometimes when we use MADE IN we are using the term as an adjective to describe where the products are produced:
using the term: usando el término; as an adjective: como un adjetivo;

Products made in the USA support American workers.
Los productos fabricados en EE. UU. apoyan a los trabajadores estadounidenses.

MADE FROM describes the materials used to create or produce something. Usually these are the unprocessed or raw materials. Processing or manufacturing changes them into something new so that we cannot tell what the materials are:
describes the materials used: describe los materiales utilizados; unprocessed or raw materials: las materias primas o sin procesar; what the materials are: cuáles son los materiales;

Tofu
is made from soybeans.

El tofu está hecho de soja.

Cheese is made from cow’s milk.
El queso se elabora con leche de vaca.

MADE FOR is used when something is created for a specific purpose or person:
is created for: se creó para; a specific purpose or person: un propósito o persona específicos;

She made a cake for her friend’s birthday.
Ella hizo un pastel para el cumpleaños de su amigo/a.

Mountain bikes are not really made for the road.
Las bicicletas de montaña no están realmente hechas para la carretera.

Sometimes MADE FOR suggests that people get along very well together:
get along very well: se llevan muy bien; together: juntos;

Those two were made for each other.
Esos dos estaban hechos el uno para el otro.

And that’s "Ask a Teacher". I’m Faith Pirlo.
