Pregunta: Muchos fans de VOA Learning English nos escriben con esta pregunta: ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de mejorar mi vocabulario?
Answer: This is a good question, VOA fans.
Respuesta: Esta es una buena pregunta, fans de VOA.
Many learners think the best way to improve their vocabulary is to learn the definition of many words. But this is not necessarily the best way to improve. The best way is to fully know a word.
Muchos estudiantes piensan que la mejor manera de mejorar su vocabulario es aprender la definición de muchas palabras. Pero esta no es necesariamente la mejor manera de mejorar. La mejor manera es conocer completamente una palabra.
To know a word, we must know its form, meaning, and usage. Today let’s talk about the form of a word. In the coming weeks, we will talk about meaning and usage.
Para conocer una palabra, debemos conocer su forma, significado y uso. Hoy vamos a hablar sobre la forma de una palabra. En las próximas semanas, hablaremos sobre el significado y el uso.
The form of a word can relate to how it sounds, is written and what its parts are. Knowing the sounds of a word includes recognizing it when it is spoken and being able to say it correctly. This includes the individual sounds and also how the sounds may change when people are saying the word quickly. For example: It’s nice to meet you.
La forma de una palabra puede relacionarse con cómo suena, se escribe y cuáles son sus partes. Conocer los sonidos de una palabra incluye reconocerla cuando se pronuncia y poder decirla correctamente. Esto incluye los sonidos individuales y también cómo pueden cambiar los sonidos cuando las personas dicen la palabra rápidamente. Por ejemplo: Es un placer conocerte.
Whensome people say this sentence at a natural speed, they might make a /ch/ sound at the end of the word “meet” and the beginning of the word “you” although the words’ spellings do not suggest this.
Cuando algunas personas dicen esta oración a una velocidad natural, pueden hacer un sonido /ch/ al final de la palabra “meet” y al principio de la palabra “you”, aunque la ortografía de las palabras no lo sugiera.
This sound change does not affect the meaning of the words. But it might cause you trouble when you are trying to understand the sentence.
Este cambio de sonido no afecta el significado de las palabras, pero puede causarle problemas cuando intente comprender la oración.
In English, stress is important to the sound of a word, and it can even decide whether a word is a noun or a verb.
En inglés, el acento es importante para el sonido de una palabra, e incluso puede determinar si una palabra es un sustantivo o un verbo.
For example, the word spelled r-e-c-o-r-d can be thought of as two words. When we stress the first part of the word, RE-cord, it is a noun. When we stress the second part of the word, re-CORD, it is a verb. What appears to be one word is really two parts of speech. This is part of knowing what form a word takes.
Por ejemplo, la palabra escrita r-e-c-o-r-d puede considerarse como dos palabras. Cuando enfatizamos la primera parte de la palabra, RE-cord, es un sustantivo. Cuando enfatizamos la segunda parte de la palabra, re-CORD, es un verbo. Lo que parece ser una palabra es en realidad dos partes del discurso. Esto es parte de saber qué forma tiene una palabra.
The form of a word also involves its parts. It is important to recognize the root word in addition to prefixes or suffixes. These are added beginnings or endings, which change the meaning of the word’s root.
La forma de una palabra también involucra sus partes. Es importante reconocer la palabra raíz además de los prefijos o sufijos. Se trata de inicios o finales añadidos que cambian el significado de la raíz de la palabra.
For example, knowing that the word “addition” includes recognizing the verb “to add” plus the suffix –t-i-o-n, which suggests a state or an action. Knowing the word “untrue” includes recognizing the base word “true” and the prefix -un, which means “not.”
Por ejemplo, saber que la palabra “addition” incluye reconocer el verbo “to add” más el sufijo –t-i-o-n, que sugiere un estado o una acción. Conocer la palabra “untrue” incluye reconocer la palabra base “true” y el prefijo -un, que significa “not”.
When we look at English words in this way, we can see that our vocabulary expands by understanding a word’s form.
Cuando observamos las palabras en inglés de esta manera, podemos ver que nuestro vocabulario se expande al comprender la forma de una palabra.
As we saw in the word “record," the same word can work as two parts of speech.
Como vimos en la palabra “record”, la misma palabra puede funcionar como dos partes del discurso.
VOA fans, the best way to improve your vocabulary is to really “know a word,” its form, meaning, and usage, not just a definition.
Fans de VOA, la mejor manera de mejorar su vocabulario es realmente “conocer una palabra”, su forma, significado y uso, no solo una definición.
