Hola
amig@:
HOY FESTEJAMOS CONTIGO 19 AÑOS EN INTERNET.
¡APRECIAMOS TU CONSTANTE APOYO A NUESTROS
CURSOS!
El uso de los pronombres ingleses en el
lenguaje inclusivo. De ello trata el
audiotexto de hoy. En ese sentido, sobre los
patrones en el habla de las personas LGBT, el
profesor de lingüística Lal Zimman comenta:
"Cuando el parlamento británico ordenó que
los documentos oficiales fueran editados para
usar el pronombre genérico HE, su
explícito razonamiento era que "los hombres
son mejores que las mujeres". Aunque todavía hay
personas que lo objetan
–incluidos
los estudiantes en el aula–
cada
vez más académicos han comenzado a aceptar el
singular THEY en la escritura formal. Si los
pronombres cambian lentamente, lo atribuiría a
los procesos sociales más que a los
lingüísticos".

PRONOUNS AND GENDER |
AUDIO |
|
|
When I was on the train
yesterday, I heard someone say this: “Someone left
THEIR bag on the train”. Can you find anything wrong
with the sentence?
heard:
escuché a (hear/heard/heard/hearing); someone: alguien; left:
dejó, olvidó (leave/left/left/leaving); anything wrong: algo erróneo;
If you looked in a
traditional English grammar book, you would learn that the sentence should be,
“Someone left HIS bag on the train”. The rule is to use the
singular pronoun “he” when the gender of a person is not known.
if you looked in:
si revisaras; you would learn: aprenderías, te enterarías de; should
be: debería ser; gender: género (gramatical); not known:
desconocido;
But, if you asked native
English speakers if there is something wrong with the sentence, many would
probably answer "no".
if you asked:
si les preguntaras; would probably answer: probablemente responderían;
The pronoun
THEIR is
generally plural. The speaker was talking about just one person. However,
American English speakers use THEIR and
THEY as singular pronouns all the
time in spoken English. They use it when the gender of a person
is not known. They also use it when they do not want to say the gender.
however: sin
embargo; all the time: todo el tiempo;
Writers also try to use both
HE and
SHE to show they do not discriminate against females.
They might also use HE/SHE or
HIM/HER instead of choosing one singular
pronoun.
try to use:
tratan de utilizar; discriminate against females: excluyen, discriminan
en contra de las mujeres; they might also use: incluso podrían utilizar;
instead of choosing: en vez de elegir;
Another approach to this
problem is to use a gender-neutral
pronoun – a word that does
not show gender. One place where these pronouns became popular is in
virtual or online communities.
approach:
estrategia; gender-neutral pronoun: pronombre neutral al género;
virtual or online communities: comunidades que se comunican por
Internet;
In Sweden, two nursery
schools have used the gender-neutral pronoun,
HEN since 2012. The Swedish
government started using HEN this year and added it to the official dictionary.
Sweden:
Suecia; Swedish: sueco; started using: comenzó a utilizar;
A student organization at the
University of Wisconsin recommends using gender-neutral pronouns to respect
transgender individuals.
to respect:
para respetar (a las); transgender individuals: personas transexuales;
Teresa Schmedding is an
editor at the Daily Herald Media Group and a member of the
American Copy Editors Society
(ACES).
editor:
redactora; member: asociado, miembro;
At a recent meeting of the
organization in Pittsburgh, she says some editors discussed the use of the
pronoun THEY. Ms. Schmedding says some members were unhappy with the use of
HIS or
HER in the stories.
recent
meeting: congreso reciente; unhappy with: disconformes con;
"Language is a constantly
evolving thing and we need to evolve. It has become so common, in our language
now, that people frequently use the singular
THEY all the time. My question is,
what’s the harm?”
a
constantly evolving thing: un asunto en constante evolución; we need to
evolve: necesitamos evolucionar; it has become so common: se ha
vulgarizado tanto; what's the harm?: ¿cuál es el daño? ¿en qué afecta?;
Writers look to books like
“The Chicago Manual of Style” for the rules. This book says to use a plural noun,
if possible, and to avoid using the singular pronouns
HIM or
HER when the
gender of the subject is not stated.
rules:
reglas o normas de estilo en la escritura; to avoid: evitar; the
gender of the subject: el género del sujeto; is not stated: no se
indica o manifiesta;
For example, the sentence:
“Each student brought HIS
or HER book to class” would change to
“The students brought THEIR
books to class”.
brought:
trajo, trajeron (bring/brought/brought/bringing); would change to:
cambiaría por;
Ms. Schmedding says the most
important thing for writers is to make the language easy to understand.
easy to
undestand: fácil de entender;
“The overriding issue is
clarity. We want people to understand what we are saying. So if people already
understand when you use the singular
THEY what you mean, why make up a
new word?”
the
overrriding issue: el aspecto, tema prioritario; clarity: la claridad;
what we are saying: lo que estamos diciendo; what you mean: lo que
quieres decir; why make up: por qué inventar;
A look back at the history of
English shows that great writers used
THEY as a singular pronoun.
Chaucer, writing in the 14th century, used it, as did Shakespeare,
Jane Austen, and George Bernard Shaw.
a look back:
una mirada retrospectiva; that great writers used: los grandes escritores
utilizaban;
Then in the late 18th
century, grammar writers said THEY should not be used as a singular
pronoun. Today, many English speakers
are saying that, “if everyone uses it,
THEY must be right”. I’m Jonathan Evans.
the late 18th
century: el siglo 18; grammar writers: los lingüistas; they must
be right: deben tener razón. |

DOS PUNTOS IMPORTANTES: |
|
1. Un pronombre específico de género (gender-specific pronoun) es un pronombre asociado con un género gramatical particular, como masculino, femenino o neutro, o con un género (o sexo) social, como femenino o masculino. Los ejemplos incluyen los pronombres personales en tercera persona en inglés HE y SHE. |
|
2. Un pronombre neutral al género (gender-neutral pronoun), por el contrario, es un pronombre que no está asociado con un género gramatical o social en particular y que no implica, por ejemplo, el hombre o la mujer. Muchos pronombres ingleses –THEY, entre otros– son neutrales en cuanto al género. |
