Hello! This week on Ask a
Teacher, we will answer a
question from Max in Ukraine about
the difference between ENERGY and
POWER.
¡Hola! Esta semana en Pregúntale
a un Profesor, responderemos una
pregunta de Max en Ucrania sobre la
diferencia entre ENERGÍA y POTENCIA.
QUESTION:
Dear Learning English, I'm Max from
Ukraine. I'm improving my English by
listening and viewing materials. I
have a question about the difference
in the meaning of two similar words:
ENERGY and POWER. Thank you, Max.
PREGUNTA: Estimado Aprendiendo
Inglés, soy Max de Ucrania. Estoy
mejorando mi inglés escuchando y
viendo materiales. Tengo una
pregunta sobre la diferencia en el
significado de dos palabras
similares: ENERGÍA y POTENCIA.
Gracias, Max.
ANSWER:
Dear Max, Thank you for this
interesting question. These words
are commonly used interchangeably,
meaning they are used in place of
each other. But there are important
differences in use under some
conditions. Let’s start with how
these two words differ in the study
of science.
RESPUESTA: Estimado Max, Gracias por
esta interesante pregunta. Estas
palabras se usan comúnmente
indistintamente, lo que significa
que se usan una en lugar de la otra.
Pero hay diferencias importantes en
el uso bajo algunas condiciones.
Comencemos con cómo estas dos
palabras difieren en el estudio de
la ciencia.
"ENERGY" AND "POWER" IN SCIENCE
"ENERGÍA" Y
"POTENCIA" EN LA CIENCIA
ENERGY is the ability to do work or
create some kind of physical change.
For example:
ENERGÍA es la capacidad de realizar
un trabajo o crear algún tipo de
cambio físico. Por ejemplo:
ENERGY is used to lift a box.
Se usa la ENERGÍA para
levantar una caja.
The amount of ENERGY to lift the box
is the same. But what if you can
lift the box faster than someone
else? This is where the word POWER
comes in. POWER
is how fast the work or change is
done. In the field of physics, power
is often measured in
watts.
La
cantidad de ENERGÍA para levantar la
caja es la misma. Pero, ¿y si puedes
levantar la caja más rápido que otra
persona? Aquí es donde entra la
palabra POTENCIA. POTENCIA es qué
tan rápido se realiza el trabajo o
el cambio. En el campo de la física,
la potencia a menudo se mide en
vatios.
An ENERGY-saving
light bulb will use
about 10 to 15 watts of POWER.
Una lámparita (bombilla) de bajo
consumo de ENERGÍA utilizará entre
10 y 15 vatios de POTENCIA.
"ENERGY" IN EVERYDAY CONVERSATION
"ENERGÍA" EN
LA CONVERSACIÓN COTIDIANA
ENERGY as a noun can describe the
ability to do physical activities.
It can be the feeling of life and
enthusiasm
that you use to complete tasks.
ENERGÍA como sustantivo puede
describir la capacidad de realizar
actividades físicas. Puede ser el
sentimiento de vida y (nivel de)
entusiasmo que usas para completar
las tareas.
If you have low or no ENERGY, you
may feel tired or run down.
Si tienes poca o ninguna
ENERGÍA, puedes sentirte cansado/a o
agotado/a.
ENERGY can be temporary. You may
have a lot of energy in the morning,
but by the afternoon you may not
have any energy.
La
ENERGÍA puede ser temporal. Puede
que tengas mucha energía por la
mañana, pero por la tarde puede que
no tengas nada de energía.
Coffee gives me ENERGY, but it
quickly wears off.
El café me da energía, pero
ésta desaparece rápidamente.
"POWER" IN EVERYDAY CONVERSATION
"POTENCIA/PODER" EN LA CONVERSACIÓN
COTIDIANA
POWER, as a noun, can mean the

POTENCIA/PODER, como sustantivo,
puede significar la habilidad o
capacidad de hacer algo. También
puede significar que está dentro de
tus posibilidades o que tienes los
recursos para hacer algo. Este
significado se asocia con que el

naturalmente.
I don’t have the brain POWER to
finish my homework tonight.
No tengo el PODER mental
para terminar mi tarea esta noche.
To HAVE POWER means that you have
control over something. If you HAVE
POWER, you have the ability and
legal right to do something. To COME
INTO POWER or TAKE POWER in a
country means that a person or group
controls it in some way.
TENER
PODER significa que tienes control

We can also use POWER to talk about
energy resources like nuclear and
electricity.
También podemos usar PODER para
hablar de recursos energéticos como
la energía nuclear y la
electricidad:
Nuclear POWER is environmentally
friendly.
La ENERGÍA nuclear es
respetuosa con el medio ambiente.
VERB "TO POWER"
VERBO
"POTENCIAR/ALIMENTAR"
POWER can also be a verb meaning to
provide energy to make something
operate:

like cell phones.
Las baterías ALIMENTAN
nuestros dispositivos inteligentes
como los celulares.
